Brilliant idea #99. Homes from decommissioned warships

decomissioned warshipMy nearest city is Portsmouth in the UK which is the home of the British Navy.

The city hasn’t been hit quite as badly as other former Naval base cities such as Plymouth however its once rich heritage as a ship building city is long gone. One of the saddest sites in Portsmouth Harbour are the ‘ghost’  ships – Naval warships at anchor waiting to be purchased and sailed somewhere to be dismantled.

Brilliant idea #99 is to turn these ships into sustainable homes. Rather than cutting the ship into thousands, or even millions of pieces, they can be turned into a few smaller pieces and turned into homes.

It’s an ambitious idea, and it could start with a design competition.

  1. Dreamforce in SF this year will be 160,000 people. Hotel space is at a premium, so Salesforce is renting a cruise ship, parking it in the city so there is”hotel” space for another 5,000 people
