Re-thinking the butter knife

I’m of an age that I grew up speading nice soft spreadable margarine on my bread and always wondered how, for as wonderful as it is, mankind spread butter on bread before the invention of spreadable alternatives.

Regular readers of this blog will know that I love ideas that solve a problem that must have been with us for centuries if not thousands of years. Well here it is. The knife that allows you to spread butter straight from the fridge onto bread.

butter knifeA grater integrated along the edge of the blade creates small ‘worms’ of butter that can easily be spread. It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s apparently unique in the history of silverware.

It’s been a hit on Kickstarter with nearly 13,000 backers and they are sure to get to their funding target. Well done them. The innovation lesson here is to never assume that a problem is a problem because it can’t be solved!
